When I was growing up, I have heard elders in my family discuss about these simple therapies as having an incredible influence to rejuvenate the entire body and cure chronic ailments. In my own personal experiments and experiences, I have found their benefits to be nothing less than astonishing.
Here at Sat Darshan, we embarked on a more detailed study of such detox-therapies. This allowed us the time to better understand the complex synergies between the mind, the physical body, and the benefits that detox techniques like leaf and mud baths provide. Let us explore this together below.
Recently, almost every school of alternative medicine are concluding that the “un burnt” toxins present in our body is the cause of origin of every disease.
How do toxins accumulate in our body?
Nature has bestowed on all living beings the common drive to search for food, at the expense of physical movement. This is, you have to move to find your food and eat it. Such physical activity is usually directly relative to the prevailing living or hunting conditions.
But humans has long fallen out of this natural cycle. Indeed, failing to change your eating habits in accordance with today’s minimal physical activity paves the way for toxins to get accumulated in your body.
Although there are many subtle toxins, the first and foremost is the accumulation of the un burnt wastes on the skin, which slowly clogs the sweat glands. This obstructs the possibility of our skin to breathe, release excess heat in summer, and also prevents the body from extracting natural air borne energies from the natural environment.
We usually assume that oxygen is only absorbed through the nasal cavity. In fact, there are minute pores throughout the body. Our entire body is breathing at every moment. These micro-pores of the body not only absorb energy from the outside, but also expel dangerous toxin wastes every moment.
In the absence of normal physical activity, or if you fail to wake up to a diet that is suitable for your physical movement, your vitality will reduce and the pores of the skin become clogged, unable to push outthese toxins.
This is followed by the blockage of all the exhaust cavities that are present throughout the surface of our body. Thus, all our energies, vigour, and present vitalities are accumulated to fight with these toxins – which should have been pushed out in the first place! This results in the interruption of the natural energy flow to the rest of the vital organs in our body.
Over a period of time, our organs thus become weak and we lose our immunity. This results in a diversity of illnesses which then begin to infiltrate the body.
The above process is so slow and gradual, that we do not immediately perceive the effects that these toxins have on our body. It is only with the onset of a chronic illness, that serves as a wake up call to our way of life.
“Removal of Toxins”
Now let’s get to know about the benefits of the leaf and mud bath therapies.
The night before taking this treatment, it is advisable to take fruits or a light porridge. This should be continued in the morning for breakfast as well. About an or two before the terapy begins, sip about one and half litres of water. The water should be sipped slowly, if you gulp it down the body will send you on a quick bathroom break. Slow sipping of water gives the body time to absorb the water as opposed to it running out of your system.
Then, at about ten or eleven in the morning, when the sun is at its peak, lie down on an open ground or terrace. With the help of a few others, cover the entire body with many plantain leaves such that it feels like a cocoon. Tie the leaves up together, and make sure you leave a hole near your nose, big enough to breathe comfortably.
As time goes on, the sun’s heat begins to work its magic, and the banana leaf will act like a convection oven. Your body will begin to sweat profusely, and this natural steam or sauna will soften the skin and make it supple.
At this very moment, the water that you consumed just before the therapy will burst the pores open and rush out in the form of sweat forcing all the accumulated toxins out as waste. All the pores of the body open up, and the body begins to breathe in full.
Our energies, which were struggling to dispose off toxins all these days, will abandon their long struggle and travel to all the parts of the body. This boosts the vitality of the feeble organs tremendously and makes them lively.
From that moment on, the immune system will recharge to begin its fight against all old ailments. This is what our ancestors have experimented with and prescribed as a probable cure for many chronic diseases.
This applies to both mud and leaf baths. Unlike ordinary steam and sauna baths, plantain leaves contains natural beneficial antioxidants such as polyphenol which get absorbed by the body. Likewise in mud baths, the basic nutrients of red mountain soil and deeply buried river silt are absorbed into the body and have numerous benefits.
These are probably the main benefits of such therapies, as I and a few of our friends at Sat Darshan have experienced ourselves. Of course, there are many other benefits to the mind, body, and the soul – all available on search engines – to the point of attaining enlightenment J
What I have shared here are the basic convictions out of my own experience.
We cordially invite you all for this revival guidance and training at our Sat Darshan retreat on the banks of the Siruvani River.
